Nakornpayap International School

History
Nakornpayap International School (NIS) was founded in 1993.  A group  of investors identified a need for a comprehensive, secular international school using  a United States curriculum altered for the cultural and language needs of students at all grade levels within South East Asia.

At the time the one existing international school in Chiang Mai did not offer instruction beyond Grade 10. The original planners approached Ms. Aurawan Chaisorn to become an investor in the project.  At the time she was interested in the project due to her desire to make sure that her nephew, whom she was raising, would receive an education that she felt confident with.   By the opening of the school, Ms. Aurawan was the sole investor and founder of the school.

The school originally opened at 164 Chiang Klan Road in September of 1993 with ten teachers and 36 students.  The first commencement ceremony occurred two years later in June 1995, with a graduating class of six students.  In December 1995 the school moved to the former Angate Sports Club near the Payap University Mae Khao campus.

The 1996/97 academic year was eventful in that NIS had its Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Candidacy Status visit, as well as the school receiving full licensure by the Thai Ministry of Education.  Full accreditation from WASC was received at the end of the 2000/01 academic year, making NIS the second school in northern Thailand to be accredited and the first in northern Thailand to be accredited from Preschool through Grade 12.

In December 2001, Piti Yimprasert, Ph.D., the parent of one of the students attending the school, purchased NIS.  The school officially came under new ownership on May 1, 2002.  At that time Krishya Yimprasert, M.Sc. became the Managing Director of the school.  The new ownership immediately started to make major improvements in the school.  Construction was started on a purpose built school facility and the school was completely re-resourced with upto date textbooks and computer equipment.

On March 3, 2003, as soon as the classrooms were ready for occupation, the school moved from its Angate location to its current location.  All construction of the current facilities was completed during the spring semester of the 2003/04 academic year.

Currently, NIS has graduates who  are pursuing or have pursued higher education in over 14 countries around the world.  Other students have started their own businesses or gone into family businesses.  A fair number have remained in communication with the school and their old teachers over the years.  While the observable history of NIS has been a positive one, it is the intangible history that is most important.  It is the memories, friendships and relationships that started in the NIS community and have survived even after leaving the school itself.

Facilities
Facilities at Nakornpayap International School are both modern and of a high international standard.

The campus is comprised of three academic buildings; one for secondary school and administration, one is for the Elementary students and the third building which opened in August 2008 is for the Early Childhood Center. In all 29 air-conditioned classrooms.

With the completion if its new campus, NIS now includes a fullsized gymnasium, a 25-meter swimming pool, chemistry and science laboratories and a large playing field.

Our library has grown year by  year and now offers students at every grade level the resource materials needed to enrich their studies. A full-time, professional librarian is on hand to properly index all books and assist in research.

The cafeteria offers both western and Thai food, cooked freshly on the premises by an experienced chef.

The school also has three vans available for field trips. A daily bus sevice is provided for students in various regions of Chiang Mai.

There is also a safe, enclosed play area for younger children situated beside the elementary building.

Mission
Nakornpayap International School is a multi-cultural setting where children are provided the opportunity to acquire an excellent education. We strive to develop in all students a quality of concern for others, open mindedness, and trust, as well as an appreciation of their own dignity as human beings. Not only do we stress development of the individual, but also emphasize the importance of living meaningfully and effectively in a larger world society. We believe that not all learning takes place in the classroom and have a strong program of extra curricular activities where students can more fully develop individual potentials along with leadership skills and self-esteem. Finally we believe that education is an ongoing process and encourage students to realize this so they can be prepared to meet the ever changing future challenges.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
From the above philosophy, the goals and objectives include, but are not limited to the following statements.

  1. To provide quality education following a United States  curriculum that prepares students for successful entrance into university.
  2. To stress open-mindedness, a tolerance for multiple perspectives, and a knowledge of various cultures and languages.
  3. To stress high expectations for achievement in which students can fully develop their individual potentials.
  4. To help develop the students skills in self-evaluation, self-discipline and acceptance of responsibility.
  5. To develop higher level cognitive skills, strategic thinking in the use of these skills, rich content of knowledge, deep understanding of concepts, and an effective use and knowledge of technology.
  6. To emphasize cooperative learning and teaching at all grade levels and in all areas of the curriculum.
  7. To provide educational guidance and direction to foster healthy social development including but not limited to the following objectives:
    •  The importance of personal integrity and individual responsibility for attitudes, behavior and lifelong learning.
    • A respect for the dignity and worth of each and every individual and universal human rights.
    • The responsibility of the individual to family and community.
    • An emphasis on positive attitudes and behaviors which demonstrate courtesy, kindness and compassion.
    • A commitment to environmental conservation and the prudent use of natural resources.
    • A commitment to non-violent means of conflict resolution in personal, community and civil affairs and relationships.
    • The value of fair play in sports and the relative importance of competition.
    • A holistic perspective concerning the physical, cognitive, emotional and ethical growth and development of individuals and communities.

NIS strives to nurture in all students a quality of concern for others, open mindedness, and responsibility, as well as an appreciation of their own dignity as human beings.

Not only do we stress thedevelopment of the individual, but also emphasize the importance of living meaningfully and effectively in a larger world society.

We realize that not all learning takes place in the classroom. Therefore, we have a strong program of extra curricular activities in which students can more fully develop their individual potential, along with leadership skills and self esteem.

Finally, we believe education is a lifelong, ongoing process. We encourage students to under stand this premise so they will be prepared to meet future challenges.

Goals and Objectives
